Russian prosecutors said they suspected "terrorists" were responsible and had opened an investigation.

No group claimed responsibility for the blasts, but suspicion is likely to fall in groups of northern Russia, the Caucasus, where Moscow is fighting a growing insurgency.

The first blast destroyed the second car of a train that was in the Lubyanka metro station, near the headquarters of the main internal security service of Russia (FSB) in 0756 (0356 GMT), killing 22 people.

Another blast destroyed the second car of a train waiting at the Park Kultury metro station in 0837 (0437 GMT), killing 12 people, an emergencies ministry spokesman.

"The explosion hit the second carriage of a subway train that was stopped at Lubyanka in 0756 (0356 GMT)," ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova told Reuters.

She said she had killed the two inside the car and the platform. The stations were full of passengers during peak hours.
